A farmhouse at the epicentre of the Basque coast
Arbonne is not a surf town. It is a quiet Basque village with a few red-shuttered houses, a fronton, some farmland, the Pyrenees filling the southern horizon. The ocean is just 4km away, and this has been enough to keep the population largely unbothered.

INDARRA occupies an 1870 farmhouse. The bones of the original structure, thick walls and heavy timber, have been here since Napoleon III was in charge. Indarra means strength in Basque. Appropriate.
Biarritz-based architect Delphine Carrère handled the renovation. She worked with the existing structure, adding cream tones, clean lines and designer furniture without softening the building's essential character. A heated 20-metre pool, a fireplace lounge, a bright dining room, a sunlit terrace facing the mountains. Each space feels rooted in the Basque hills, avoiding both cliché and cold modernism.
Côte des Basques and Guéthary less than 15 minutes away, Hossegor in less than 30. This is a quiet and comfortable base at the centre of one of Europe's richest stretches of surf coastline.

Rooms
The thirty-three rooms are spread across the property, ranging from 17m² Superior room with balcony to the 44m² Petit Inda apartment with its own kitchen for longer stays. Triple rooms, suites and the apartment can fit families. Double rooms are generous for two. The Cabin is the one to request first: a standalone wooden suite at the garden's edge, 41m², California king bed, private terrace, the feeling of being slightly apart from everything.
Carrère's design language runs throughout: clean lines, warm light, cosy atmosphere. Contemporary art and photography bring life to the walls. Bathrooms have walk-in showers and Alaena skincare products. Every room has air conditioning, sound insulation, and Wi-Fi that actually works. Some have private terraces or balconies looking onto the garden or the Basque countryside beyond.

Food & Drinks
Breakfast is worth waking up for: local and organic products, short-circuit sourcing, freshly made crêpes, pastries, and enough variety to keep a week-long stay interesting. It can be taken in the dining room, in the garden, or in your room, depending on the mood.
Tea time arrives at four with homemade cakes from family recipes and crêpes with artisanal jams. Shortly after, the apéritif reminds you where you are: Banka trout, bluefin tuna, tarama, foie gras, croque monsieur on good bread, house cocktails, local beers, regional wines. Probably the best hour of the day (according to our French editor).
In the evening, guests have access to the shared kitchen alongside a daily selection of organic, seasonal bocaux (jars), with meat, fish, or vegetarian options. If you want to dine out, the team keeps a curated list, from Michelin stars to village tables. Arbonne has Lurrak and Marius. L'Auberge Basque is close. Biarritz is twelve minutes away with everything you'd expect.

Activities
The Inda Spa includes a sauna, hammam, and massage rooms. The signature INDARRA massage is tailored to whatever your body needs after a day of surfing, hiking, or simply existing. Cold plunge sessions with a dedicated coach are available for muscle recovery, though the persuading is left to you.
The yoga studio is a light-filled room that opens directly onto the pool and garden. Classes are open to non-guests, run six days a week, and rotate through Vinyasa, Yin and Yoga Stretch with local instructors.
Beyond the property, pick your outdoor itinerary. La Rhune (905 metres) is reachable on foot or via the old cog railway. A coastal path runs 23 kilometres along the cliffs. Electric bikes and mountain bikes are available for the inland adventures.

Surfing
INDARRA is not on the beach. It is, however, at the centre of arguably Europe's richest concentration of surf breaks.
Within a 15-minute drive: Côte des Basques (the birthplace of European surfing, a longboarder's paradise), Grande Plage (gentle, accessible), Parlementia (a reef break that holds serious swell and draws experienced riders), Cenitz, and Lafitenia, among others. Hossegor, just thirty minutes away, delivers some of Europe's heaviest beach break barrels when you want a change of scenery and a different kind of challenge. Whatever your level, whatever the conditions, something is almost certainly working.
The Basque coast offers year-round surf. Autumn and spring bring the best swells with manageable water temperatures. Summer runs smaller and warmer, suited to beginners. Winter delivers serious Atlantic power for those willing to pull on a thicker wetsuit.
Sébastien, INDARRA's owner, is a keen surfer. He built a dedicated Surf Room to store the quiver. You can rent your board at the hotel, or even buy it. Lessons and exclusive coaching with Louis Marchiset can be arranged. INDARRA also runs dedicated surf weeks with personalised coaching, intensive sessions and nutritional guidance. The distance from the beach doesn't change how serious they are about surfing.

The People Behind
Sébastien Grandchamp spent his career in Parisian hospitality. Charlotte, his wife, worked in the luxury industry. But the Basque Country kept pulling. Sébastien had lived in the region as a child, and the idea of returning became less of a fantasy and more of a plan.
The renovation was entrusted to Delphine Carrère, an architect with a precise understanding of Basque building traditions, who succeeded in blending local identity with contemporary comfort.
Opened in 2024, INDARRA is Sébastien and Charlotte's first hotel. It shows, in the right way: the place has the warmth of a family home. Objects gathered across years of travel furnish the common areas. Afternoon tea follows family recipes. The team makes you feel like you belong. Dogs are welcome. Children have space to run. It is more a life project than a business venture.
