A beachfront boutique hideaway with Gerupuk at your doorstep
South Lombok is changing fast. Kuta gets busier and more dialled-in every season. Bumbang Bay still feels outside the circuit. The beach is quiet, fishing boats rest on the sand, Gerupuk breaks on the horizon, and the protected hills of Gunung Tunak rise to the left. Kuara is right there, on the edge of the water.

Sixteen villas, built low in stone, timber, clay and thatch. The architecture draws on the island's Sasak and Bugis traditions and pairs them with a contemporary sense of comfort. The garden runs all the way to the beach. A saltwater river pool winds between the villas, and a second pool overlooks the reef from the sand.
All of the Gerupuk breaks are a short boat ride away. The kitchen cooks from its own garden, much of it over fire. Beyond the resort, Kuara runs a programme of Lombok experiences in-house, led by local fishermen, foragers, cooks and guides. This is slow travel, done properly: experiencing Lombok authentically, through the people who know it best.

Rooms
The villas have a contemporary island aesthetic, combining local materials and elegant furnishings with generous indoor-outdoor living. The mood is calm and private, with each space feeling open to the gardens, river or beach while maintaining a polished sense of comfort.
Garden Cottages sit among the trees, with a terrace opening onto the garden and a hammock outside. Garden Houses are larger, with two bedrooms, a kitchenette, and a sunken fire pit in the yard. River Houses are raised timber structures beside the saltwater lagoon pool, with an open kitchen and living area, plus a deck. Beach Houses are closest to the shore, with two ensuite bedrooms, stone baths, a private pool, and ocean views.
Every category includes air conditioning, ceiling fans, Wi-Fi, smart TVs, work desks, minibars, and tea and coffee facilities, with daily housekeeping and laundry.

Food & Drinks
The kitchen follows what the gardens and the water give. Ingredients are grown on site or sourced nearby. Spices are ground by hand. Much of the cooking is done over fire. Menus shift with the season.
It feels distinctly Lombok: ayam taliwang (the island’s fiery grilled chicken), sate campur skewers with house-made sambals, or your own lobster, freshly grilled. The kitchen delivers the regional heat and depth the island is known for.
Food is also part of the wider Kuara experience. Walk the garden with a chef, learn to make sambal, visit the morning market by bike, or fish at dawn and have the catch cooked for lunch.
The restaurant is open-air and beach-facing, with Bumbang Bay in front of you. It is a particularly good place to sit as the light drops over the water. Breakfast is included with accommodation. Everything else is à la carte.

Surfing
Kuara sits on Bumbang Bay, which opens onto one of the most generous stretches of surf in Lombok. The wider Gerupuk Bay holds five (or more) breaks, from gentle first-timer waves to fast, hollow barrels. Inside Right, a long, forgiving right-hander for beginners and improvers; the beefier Outside Right and the quieter Outside Left for intermediates and up; the A‑frame Don-Don, peaking both ways; and Kiddies, which only fires on the biggest days. The bay's geography means that on most combinations of tide, wind, and swell, at least one break is doing something worth paddling out for.
From the Kuara beach, the breaks are a five-minute boat ride out. Boat transfers can be booked on their own, or with a local instructor for a guided session.
The wet season, roughly November to April, tends to bring the cleanest, glassiest conditions in the bay thanks to offshore winds, while the dry season, May to October, brings bigger south-coast swell overall. There is rarely a bad month to paddle out here.

Activities
Kuara has curated an outstanding experience programme. Everything is organised in-house, led by people who know the place: fishermen, foragers, cooks, elders. Take a forest bike tour through Gunung Tunak Nature Park to a near-empty beach, or forage for clams and tide-trapped fish with local collectors.
Further out, a half-day visit reaches Gunung Pujut Mosque, one of the island's oldest sites, and a full-day forest walk leads to the sacred Benang Kelambu waterfall, fed by a spring said to be more than two hundred years old. Closer to home there is paddleboarding and canoeing across the bay, garden yoga, traditional cooking classes, dawn fishing and a sunset cruise along the coast.
The spa draws on Sasak healing traditions, with treatments prepared from local roots, leaves and oils. On site, bikes, paddleboards, canoes and beach games are complimentary.
