An Art Deco surf lodge between lake, forest, and a world-class beach break
Hossegor has a split personality. On one side, powerful Atlantic breaks that made the town one of Europe’s surf capitals. On the other, just behind the dunes, a marine lake at the edge of the Landes pine forest. Les Hortensias du Lac is built around that contrast: ocean energy, lake recovery.

The building is a 1930s Art Deco Landaise villa with white walls, arched windows, and dark timber beams. The Fontenille Collection acquired it in 2019 and renovated it with designer Beryl Le Lasseur. A grand piano, inherited from the original décor, still anchors the veranda lounge. Outside, an emerald-tiled infinity pool seems to spill towards the lake.
Twenty-five rooms. A 450sqm spa by LA:Bruke x myBlend. And a glass-walled restaurant overlooking the lake, led by a chef trained in a three-Michelin-star kitchen.
La Gravière, the break that has brought the WSL Championship Tour to Hossegor, is 500m away. The town centre, with its surf shops and oyster shacks, is a fifteen-minute walk along the coastal path.
Hossegor has always had the waves. Now it has a hotel to match them. The Michelin guide noticed, awarding Les Hortensias du Lac a Key.

Rooms
Twenty-five rooms, including six suites, split between the main house and the Maison sur le Lac. Each comes with a private terrace or balcony overlooking either the lake or the garden.
The architecture gives the spaces their character, allowing the interiors to remain deliberately understated. White-panelled walls, pale wood, linen and natural fibres keep the palette soft and restrained, with touches of terracotta, muted green and soft grey used sparingly throughout. Fifties-inspired furniture mixes with vintage objects and local craftsmanship.
Room categories range from Superiors to Lake View Suites. The latter is the standout: vaulted ceilings, a generous balcony, and uninterrupted views across the lake and pine forest.

Food & Drinks
Breakfast sets the tone: local produce, warm bread and freshly baked croissants, served in the dining room, out on the terrace or in the room.
The restaurant itself sits in a glass extension to the historic villa, opening onto the lake. The wide terrace extends the space outdoor, breezy and open on all sides in the summer.
The kitchen is led by Philippe Moreno, trained at Gérald Passédat’s three-Michelin-star Le Petit Nice in Marseille. His approach is rooted in seasonal, local, and sustainable sourcing, with close ties to fishermen, breeders, and farms (all providers are named on the menu). The menu moves between Sud-Ouest classics and bolder contemporary flavours for those who want to explore further. It’s elevated but not uptight, with a contemporary, chic guinguette feel.
In the summer, there is also a Beach House by the lake, under the pines. It serves a lighter menu of salads, charcuterie boards, small plates. By late afternoon, move to the poolside bar for cocktails, Fontenille estate wines and tapas.

Surfing
The hotel is 500 metres from La Gravière, the beach break that draws the WSL Championship Tour to Hossegor. The break is a sand-bottom A-frame that can produce heavy, hollow barrels that rival some of the best reef breaks anywhere in the world.
Other nearby spots include La Sud, La Centrale, and Les Culs Nus. More broadly, Hossegor sits on the Côte d’Argent, a 230-kilometre stretch of sandy coastline where you can still find uncrowded peaks. To the south, within thirty minutes, is the Basque coast, with reef breaks such as Guéthary, Lafitenia and Parlementia, and the long, more forgiving lines of Côte des Basques. You can always find a wave suiting your level.
Autumn is the best period, with consistent swells, favourable winds and relatively mild water. Winter can bring real size, while summer tends to be smaller and busier.
The hotel arranges private lessons with certified coaches from ESCF Seignosse, who collect guests at the property and choose the day’s best spot along the coast. Boards can be rented through Surfin Estate, a local shaper, with a wide range of longboards, retro fish and shortboards. You can even get your own board shaped, if your holiday shopping list includes something less forgettable than a tote bag.

Activities
The 450m² spa was designed to embrace the landscape. The facilities are extensive: hammam, sauna, cold bath, whirlpool, outdoor Nordic bath and a WaterRower fitness studio with Pilates classes. The treatment menu brings together myBlend’s high-performance facials, LA Bruket body rituals and Anne Millois pregnancy treatments. In the summer, Vinyasa and Hatha yoga classes take place outdoors, overlooking the lake.
Beyond the spa, the experiences make the most of the location. Guests can paddleboard on the lake, sail with a skipper, cycle through the pine forest on classic or electric bikes, or take part in cooking classes. The golf courses of Hossegor and Seignosse are nearby, with priority green fees arranged at the Golf de Seignosse. A walk around the lake and down to the beach also works as its own form of low-key reset.

The People Behind
Fontenille Collection was founded by Frédéric Biousse and Guillaume Foucher. Biousse is the former CEO who scaled SMCP (Sandro, Maje, Claudie Pierlot). Foucher is an art historian and gallerist. They opened their first property, Domaine de Fontenille in the Luberon in 2016. The collection has since grown to more than a dozen addresses across France, Italy, and Spain.
Les Hortensias du Lac was the third address to join the Collection. They describe it as "hôtellerie d'auteur": a hotel that reflects a personal vision rather than a hospitality formula. The approach is consistent across the Fontenille portfolio: find properties with architectural character, and shape the hotel around it, not imposed upon it. The philosophy is disarmingly simple: build the hotel you would want to stay in.
