The flight into San Salvador lands you in a country that is becoming one of Central America’s most interesting surf destinations. The road from the airport drops out of the hills and onto the Litoral, the coast highway, past black-sand beaches, roadside pupuserías and surf villages. Until you reach a rivermouth cove with a right-hand point firing into it. Mizata by Antiresort is right there.

The Antiresort name feels particularly apt: the place pairs elevated comfort and guest experience, while still feeling like a jungle camp. Tree houses in the canopy, beachfront bungalows, infinity pools facing the ocean, a serious wellness programme, and five breaks within walking distance.

For design-minded surf travellers working their way through Central America beyond the established circuits, Mizata is a reason to look at El Salvador now.

Rooms

Accommodation is set among the trees and along the sand. The Beachfront Tree Houses are the signature: elevated timber structures with teak floors, king beds, an infinity porch, and a hanging net lounge, with ocean or partial-ocean views. Jungle Tree Houses sit behind them, looking out onto the gardens. Beachfront Bungalows put you steps from the water, with a private patio, hammocks, and ocean views. Jungle Bungalows offer a quieter, garden-facing alternative. The Lodge Rooms sit just off-site near NAWI Beach House and are configured for groups, with a king bed, four bunks, and a living room.

Casona Tunan, the sister property, is a boutique hotel set in a traditional Salvadoran house. A short walk away, it offers a simpler, more local-feeling alternative within the same ecosystem.

Food & Drinks

Dining at Mizata covers two registers. Ishwi Omakase is a reservation-only tasting experience led by Chef Gerardo Cornejo. The name comes from the Náhuat word for satisfying yourself through food, and the format follows the Japanese model: a sequence of small courses chosen by the chef, built around the day's catch and local ingredients. Choose a set seven or nine courses, or the open-ended "Chef's Choice," where dishes arrive until you say stop.

Day-to-day meals and drinks happen at NAWI Beach House, the beachfront restaurant and bar. It serves à la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner, with coastal dishes drawing on Salvadoran ingredients and broader international influences. The wider food concept draws on Náhuat heritage and the four sacred ingredients the kitchen builds around: yuca, red silk bean, maize, and ayote.

Sister property Casona Tunan runs its own kitchen, Comedor Tunan, serving a traditional Salvadoran home-cooked dishes. The menu is centred on pupusas, El Salvador's national dish: thick handmade corn tortillas filled with cheese, beans, pork, or other ingredients.

Surfing

The property is within easy reach of five uncrowded breaks. Right in front of the resort is Mizata Point, one of El Salvador’s standout right-hand point breaks. Running for up to 200 metres into the bay, with fast, punchy drops, open faces, and short barrel sections on bigger days. It works from waist-high to well overhead, with the best conditions usually at low to medium tide.

Next to Mizata Point, Tweeners is an A-frame that peels both ways off a rock bottom, with barrel sections on overhead swell. Nearby beach breaks add heavier, punchier options. Soft sand-bottom waves, ideal for beginners, are just a short drive away.

The surf experience is intentionally limited. Mizata hosts fewer than five surfers at a time, keeping lineups quieter and preserving a more exclusive experience in the water. The resort has partnered with Lost Surfboards for its on-site quiver, offering a wide selection of shapes and lengths. Lessons are available with ISA-certified instructors, professional surf photography can be arranged, and boat access opens the door to more remote breaks along the coast.

El Salvador’s south-facing coast picks up south and southwest Pacific swell almost year-round. The biggest and most consistent surf arrives between March and October, while November to February brings smaller, cleaner waves better suited to beginners. Water sits around 29°C all year, so no wetsuit is needed.

Activities

The resort's wellness circuit is impressive. Daily yoga and meditation run in the two open-air beachfront shalas and are included for guests. A sauna with red-light therapy, a cold plunge and an open-air jungle gym are available through the day. Spa treatments include deep-tissue and restorative massage and facials. For recovery taken further, the Thrivelab Longevity Clinic offers treatments including IV therapy, stem-cell therapy, and hyperbaric chamber sessions.

Horseback riding can be arranged along the beach at sunset. For musicians who want to work in the jungle, there is SoundLab, an on-site recording studio. Off-property, the resort arranges excursions to Santa Ana Volcano, the waterfalls at Tamanique and La Golondrinera, the Maya ruins at Tazumal and Joya de Cerén, and the flower-village route known as Ruta de las Flores.

The People Behind

Antiresort was founded by entrepreneur Joshua Host, who launched the concept in Mizata, pushing back against the standard resort formula in favour of something rawer and more experiential. What grew up around it is an ecosystem rather than a single property: the resort itself, sister property Casona Tunan, the Thrivelab longevity and wellness clinic, and NAWI Beach House.

The Mizata Foundation gives the operation weight beyond hospitality. Its work includes the Mizata English Academy, women’s economic programmes, beach clean-ups, sea turtle conservation, and water access. In March 2026, it distributed and installed 300 water filters across the community. This isn’t a marketing device; it’s the part of the operation that makes the strongest case for why the resort belongs here.
