An intimate and colourful boutique on the beach

Troncones is one of Mexico's most understated stretches of Pacific coast. Surfers have come for years and kept it low-key. There are no large resorts here, just kilometres of beach backed by palms and jungle-covered hills. Right on the sand, facing the open ocean, Pomelo adds a splash of colour.

Pomelo is resolutely boutique: just six oceanfront rooms, a palm-filled garden, an infinity pool and the beach. The design is bright and playful, a long way from the concrete-and-neutral minimalism that has become ubiquitous across Mexico's new hotel scene. A few steps away, sister restaurant El Chiringuito de Fran took a place in the 2027 MB100, Marco Beteta's list of the 100 best restaurants in Mexico.

Pomelo makes a compelling case for design-conscious surfers: a beautiful room on the beach, the ocean out front, and serious food next door.

Rooms

All six rooms face the ocean. Founders Ángela and Fran kept the bones of the original 1980s building, including its stone walls, thick enough to hold the rooms cool through the afternoon.

The palette is distinctly regional: a tiled roof, bamboo work by a local craftsman, artisanal pieces from Michoacán. A subtle Mediterranean note comes through in the whitewashed surfaces, soft arches and warm colours.

The rooms are generous at 61 square metres, each with a king bed, a private terrace, and both an indoor and an outdoor shower. All have air conditioning, high-speed Wi-Fi and a compact bar with a Nespresso machine and Smeg kettle.

Food & Drinks

À la carte breakfast is included in the rate and served at the hotel. For lunch and dinner, sister restaurant El Chiringuito de Fran is a few steps across the sand. Chef and co-founder Fran López cooks Spanish food with produce from the Mexican Pacific and the hotel's own organic garden: paella, tapas, a raw bar, and seafood cooked over fire. Tables are set on the sand beneath the palms, though Pomelo guests can also eat under the pergola by the pool or on their own terrace.

Marco Beteta named El Chiringuito one of Mexico's 100 best restaurants in his 2026 MB100 guide.

Surfing

Playa Troncones offers kilometres of sandbars along its length. Most peaks are empty, some forgiving, some faster, depending on the swell. At the northern end, Troncones Point in Manzanillo Bay needs a solid southwest swell to switch on, but when it does it produces long, powerful left-handers; better suited to experienced surfers.

Twenty minutes north, La Saladita is one of the best longboarding waves in Mexico, a long, slow, forgiving left. It suits all levels, with enough room on smaller days for beginners to learn. Pomelo arranges lessons and transport there. Further north, The Ranch offers a more powerful alternative, with fast, long walls on a secluded, uncrowded beach; best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers.

Troncones works year round. November through April brings smaller, cleaner, more manageable waves, often glassy until midday. The biggest and longest days come on the summer swells, between May and October. Water stays warm (between 28°C and 31°C) throughout the year.

Activities

Activities and treatments are easily arranged with the hotel over WhatsApp, from ocean-facing yoga and sound baths to cacao ceremonies and massages.

Horse riding along the beach goes at sunrise or sunset, with a longer ride that carries on to a picnic on the sand. There is wildlife to watch for as well: turtles nest along this stretch of coast, and whales and manta rays pass through in season.

For quieter afternoons, the garden, the pergola and the infinity pool make it just as easy to do very little.

The People Behind

Ángela and Fran are a Spanish couple who have lived in Mexico for the past twenty years. About a decade ago, Fran left a corporate career to cook. He went on to open La Barra de Fran in Mexico City, a Madrid-style restaurant that has been in the Michelin Guide since 2024, and later Ultramarinos de Fran.

They first came to Troncones in 2008 and returned often enough that the escape became a permanent part of their lives. El Chiringuito came first, in 2024, followed by Pomelo, thought as an extension of their home.

The hotel occupies a 1980s structure originally built by FONATUR, Mexico's state tourism development agency. Rather than demolish it, Ángela and Fran kept the existing bones and worked from there, shaping the hotel around both their Mexican and Mediterranean influences.
